Misshapen Teeth: What Are My Options?

When people think of issues with the appearance of the teeth, they generally think of misplaced or crooked teeth. However, misshapen teeth can also cause your smile to look uneven or cause you to be self-conscious about your smile. Like crooked or misplaced teeth, though, misshapen teeth can be treated with relatively simple procedures such as Lumineers.

For misshapen teeth, Lumineers are carefully molded to make your teeth look more natural and your smile more symmetrical.

What are Lumineers?

Lumineers are a type of dental veneer made of porcelain. Although all porcelain veneers are very thin, Lumineers are even thinner, allowing your cosmetic dentist to place them on your teeth with minimal restructuring of the tooth surface. In some cases, Lumineers can be applied directly to the teeth without any restructuring at all.

Because of their versatility and ease of application, Lumineers are often used to correct the look of teeth that are:

  • Pitted
  • Cracked
  • Chipped
  • Severely discolored
  • Slightly misaligned
  • Misshapen

For misshapen teeth, Lumineers are carefully molded to make your teeth look more natural and your smile more symmetrical. Lumineers will give your teeth a shape consistent with that of your other teeth, giving you a perfect, long lasting smile. In addition, Lumineers can be removed if you are unhappy with the final result. This is usually not possible with other types of porcelain veneers.

How Lumineers are Applied

Like other porcelain veneers, Lumineers are usually placed in two steps involving two separate visits to your cosmetic dentist. At the first visit, the dentist makes a mold of your teeth. This mold is sent to the lab where Lumineers are manufactured. Your custom veneers will be ready usually in a few days. In general, preparation for Lumineers does not require the use of temporary veneers.

At your second visit, your cosmetic dentist will affix the veneers to your teeth using a special bonding agent. Lumineers will feel comfortable and look natural right away, and your new, perfect smile will last as long as twenty years with appropriate care.
